Membership Rules - 2011

Updated Garden Rules as Mandated for all Gardens by the
South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust (SELROSLT)

  1. Deadline for dues to be paid is May 1st.Please make checks payable to SELROSLT and mail to: David Chastain, 122 W. Concord Square, Boston, MA 02118. Gardeners whose dues are not received by May 15th may surrender their gardens.


  2. Fee Structure: Annual dues for 2011 are $65 per plot. Dues include the WSCG account plus Land Trust assessment of $10 per gardener. For gardeners on a reduced payment plan fee is $20 per plot. Gardeners who do not participate in the annual clean-ups will have $25 added to their dues payment.


  3. Governance: Leadership consists of garden members who volunteer for essential tasks to help run the garden such as Coordinator, Treasurer and Membership. There is a WSCG representative to the Land Trust Board from each garden, typically the Coordinator. The SELROSLT is fiscal agent for all gardens. The Leadership Committee names will be posted on the bulletin board in the Garden.

    The volunteer Leadership Committee has the duty of enforcing the rules and making decisions for the garden between annual meetings of all gardeners. They have authority to resolve conflicts, including refusing a plot to a gardener or dismissing a current gardener.


  4. Securing a plot: Potential gardeners must complete a plot application form to be considered for a plot. Plots are assigned on a first come, first served basis (chronological.)

    One plot per household. Grandfathering of plots is a policy set by each garden. Plots are non-transferable.


  5. Plot and Garden Maintenance:

    Newly assigned plots will by 10’ by 10’. Plots must be ready for gardening by June 1st. If there is no evidence of activity on your plot by June 15th, your plot may be reassigned. Plot fees will be refunded up to June 15th. Gardens must be prepared for winter by December 1st.

    Fencing around gardens must be of natural materials, such as wood or stone, and may not exceed 3 feet high.

    Participation at both Spring and Fall clean-ups are required of each gardener, contributing to the upkeep of the whole garden. Dates will be posted. If you are unable to attend a scheduled clean up, please notify a member of the Leadership Committee to arrange for a substitute work assignment. If you fail to show up for Spring or Fall clean up and have not previously notified a member of the Leadership Committee, you will be assessed a fine of $25. If you fail to pay the assessed fine, your gardening rights for the following year may be revoked, and you will not be eligible to receive a garden plot.

    If your plot is overgrown with weeds or otherwise neglected, you will be flagged with a yellow flag. After two weeks of no action, you will receive a red flag. If, after an additional two weeks of no action, your plot may be reassigned at the discretion of the Leadership Committee.

    If a gardener has extenuating circumstances, they need to communicate with the garden’s leadership.

    Do not pick from your neighbor's garden. Theft of anything will not be tolerated. You will lose your gardening privileges and your plot will be reassigned.

    Gardeners may use only structures or plantings that do not impede the security of the garden by the nature of their height, material or density. We recommend the use of organic materials.

    Keep plot boundaries weeded and trash free. You are responsible to care for the pathways between you and your neighbor.

    Remove all your garden trash and take it back home with you to dispose of properly. We will arrange for trash pick up for the two annually scheduled clean-ups.

    No garden member may be discriminated against due to his/her race, religion, gender, age, income level, sexual orientation or gender representation. Gardens may not be restricted only to South End or Lower Roxbury residents.

    Miscellaneous:

    Pets and pet burials are not allowed in the garden.

    No drugs or other illegal activities.

    No alcohol or smoking with the exception of garden sanctioned activities.

    Existing gardeners may request changing plots and, as such, will receive priority over prospective new gardeners.
